Patient with Pacemaker Undergoes Safe MRI at LRH
June 6, 2014
Littleton, NH - Cardiologist, Dr. Anil Mukerjee, MD, FACC, FACP, FASE, FASNC, FSCCT was involved in preparing the patient for the first MRI (magnetic resonance image) performed at Littleton Regional Healthcare on a patient who previously had a Medtronic pacemaker installed due to cardiac issues. Dr. Mukerjee worked to make adjustments to the patient's pacemaker putting it in what is known as SureScan® mode. LRH's diagnostic imaging team performed the scan. This particular pacing system is the first FDA approved pacing system designed for safe use in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) environment. The designation "MR conditional" means that a patient with this type of pacemaker has been shown to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use.
Dr. Anil Mukerjee, MD, FACC, FACP, FASE, FASNC, FSCCT assisted with the leading technology of the first patient with a pacemaker undergoing an MRI at LRH.
Littleton Regional Healthcare made the investment to offer state-of-the art magnetic imaging equipment with the recent purchase of a new Phillips Ingenia 1.5T MRI. This equipment is designed to provide comfort, speed and more revealing images. It has a wide bore opening to make patients feel less confined.
Pacemakers of the past were not designed, tested or FDA approved for access to MRI scans, but that has changed since this new technology was released by Medtronic using the SureScan® technology. In the past an MRI could change the settings and/or temporarily affect the normal operation of a pacemaker.
