The Spirit of NH Awards is New Hampshire’s largest volunteer recognition ceremony. In late October, the 2024 Spirit of NH Awards, presented by Volunteer NH, was held at the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord, NH. Volunteer NH has been hosting the Spirit of NH Awards as an annual celebration of volunteerism since 2003. The event recognizes those who go above and beyond the call to serve throughout the state, shining a spotlight on the often unsung heroes among us in front of an audience of their families, friends, colleagues, and the greater community.
Volunteer Service Awards recognize individual volunteers and groups of volunteers who provide volunteer services that strengthen communities and improve the lives of New Hampshire residents. Nominated for the Senior Category by Littleton Regional Healthcare’s Volunteer Coordinator, Dawn Lambert, long-time LRH volunteer, Michael (Mike) Miscio was among those presented with a Volunteer Service Award.
In her nomination, Dawn explained how Mike provides much-needed companionship and support to patients and visitors of LRH. He covers shifts across multiple volunteer stations four days a week, often walking up to four miles in a single shift. Dawn went on to say that Mike embodies the ideal qualities of a volunteer: kindness, compassion, dedication, and helpfulness, among others. He contributes the highest number of volunteer hours among the more than 50 volunteers in LRH’s program, dedicating an impressive 795 hours last year alone. Despite no longer driving, Mike arranges transportation to ensure he is always present for his scheduled shifts, a testament to his commitment and reliability.
Mike actively participates in volunteer recruitment efforts on behalf of LRH, where his passion and enthusiasm shine brightly. Dawn noted that Mike has a remarkable ability to engage with prospective volunteers, sharing his experiences and inspiring others to join the cause. Mike is also instrumental in training new volunteers. His patience, kindness, and willingness to share his knowledge demonstrate his dedication to fostering a supportive and informed volunteer team.
Following the awards ceremony, Dawn shared her nomination in front of LRH’s Senior Leadership Team, many of whom have grown to know Mike well over the past six years and are keenly familiar with his contributions to LRH. Following the nomination, an emotional and humble Mike read his acceptance speech aloud, where he credited his wife, Anne, son Christopher, the transportation services provided by Littleton Area Senior Center, Dawn, his fellow volunteers, and the LRH staff for making what he does possible.
