LRH Named to Forbes’ Inaugural List of America’s Best Hospitals by State

Littleton Regional Healthcare (LRH) has been named to Forbes’ inaugural list of America’s Best Hospitals by State, earning an overall rating of four stars, including five stars for patient experience and four stars for value.

The Forbes list marks the first time the publication has ranked hospitals by state, highlighting leading organizations nationwide based on publicly available data and national patient survey insights. Only a handful of New Hampshire hospitals met the criteria. LRH was distinguished as the only Critical Access Hospital in the state to make the list, recognizing the organization among the top hospitals in the country.

The new ranking evaluates hospitals based on a comprehensive set of quality measures, including patient outcomes, best practices, value of care, and patient experience. LRH’s performance in patient experience measures was a key contributor to this recognition, with results that exceed national averages across several categories. Patients consistently report strong communication with their care teams, with high marks for both physician and nurse communication. LRH also performs well in staff responsiveness, with patients noting timely assistance and support throughout their care.

Additional patient feedback highlights a high likelihood to recommend LRH to family and friends, as well as positive experiences related to discharge planning and understanding of care following hospitalization. These measures reflect the organization’s continued focus on delivering patient-centered care and ensuring individuals feel informed, supported, and confident in their care.

This recognition follows LRH’s achievement as the only hospital in New Hampshire to receive five-star ratings for both nurse and physician communication. “Together, these recognitions tell a remarkable story about our organization and the people who work here,” noted LRH President and Chief Executive Officer, Robert Nutter. “Most importantly, they affirm that Littleton Regional Healthcare is delivering exceptional care that is being recognized on a national level,” he added.

As a Critical Access Hospital (CAH), LRH serves a rural community with unique healthcare needs and resource considerations. Critical Access Hospitals are small, rural facilities designated to improve access to care in underserved areas, often operating with fewer beds, limited staffing, and geographic challenges that differ from larger systems. Despite these factors, LRH continues to achieve performance results that meet or exceed those of larger institutions, demonstrating that high-quality, patient-centered care is not defined by size, but by commitment, expertise, and a deep connection to the community it serves.
